Fugue
Summer 2012 Prototype | Adobe Flash

Fugue is a point-and-click exploration game where players are assigned a persona and explore a fantasy world, the Fugue Meadows, which is guarded by "the Maiden of the Fountain." In this hidden world, one's actions are guided by tarot cards, a gift received from the Maiden upon entering. Free to spend a day in the Meadows, the player moves from event to event, using their cards to determine the outcomes of their travels with outcomes that are often unexpected and entertaining. Will you choose to be a benevolent, kindly good samaritan? A fierce and commanding loner? Or a clever, funny trickster? The answer to this question is in the cards...

Research Statement

Fugue is a game about choosing what sorts of actions you want to take. The game provides each player with a persona at the opening of the game, but that's just a starting point. Will players hew to that persona, choosing tarot cards that represent actions the character might take? That's one option... or they may play their own personal desires and choose cards the player might take... or cards they think are appropriate for a game in the point-and-click adventure genre. By giving players an opportunity to build their action palette, the game offers the researcher an opportunity to examine the relationship between the player and how they wish to be represented through play.
