GAMBIT Partners

The Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab aims to train a new generation of game developers who will carry innovative ideas from the academy into the games industry.  At its lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and soon at a lab in Singapore, the top students from Singapore's universities and polytechnics collaborate with students and researchers from MIT to create new experiments in interactive media.

The participating departments from these academic institutions together provide a pool of students with a broad range of specialties, including computer science, media studies, business management, and the arts.  Through GAMBIT, students from these diverse academic environments build friendships and strategic alliances that will last as they transition into the professional sphere.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) was created to focus on and develop Singapore's media industry, putting Singapore at the forefront of the media age. The MDA was formed by the merger of the Singapore Broadcasting Authority, the Films and Publications Department, and the Singapore Film Commission (SFC) in response to the convergence of different media that requires a consistent approach in developing and managing the different forms of media. The raison d'etre of the MDA is to develop Singapore into a vibrant global city so as to foster a creative economy and connected society.

In August 2006, the Interactive Digital Media Research and Development Programme Office (IDMPO), hosted by the Media Development Authority (MDA), was set up to coordinate a multi-agency strategic Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Research and Development (R&D) Programme for which the National Research Foundation allocated S$500 million over 5 years. The agencies include the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), DesignSingapore Council, Economic Development Board (EDB), Infocomm Development Authority (IDA), International Enterprise (IE) Singapore, Singapore Science Centre, Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).

Since its inception, the IDMPO has established an IDM R&D Programme with four key trusts and three innovation for the IDM sector, yielding both economic and social devidends; so that by 2015, our efforts would have helped to value-add S$10 billion and created 10,000 new jobs by 2015. The IDMPO also publishes i.BITS, an electronic newsletter with updates on the latest happenings in the local IDM space, and organizes and supports periodic IDM events for networking, IDM specific announcements, and match-making between industry and R&D partners.

School of Computing
Established in 1998, the NUS School of Computing provides a stimulating environment that amalgamates the best of educational traditions, drawing its faculty staff of 200 from leading universities ranging from the Ivy League to Oxbridge.

The School, which is a fully fledged faculty within the National University of Singapore, has about 2,000 students, a quarter of them pursuing graduate studies. Communications and New Media Programme, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore is the only programme in Southeast Asia to offer a concentration in communications and new media studies within a single department. The programme is innovative and dynamic, taking into account the ever-changing new media landscape in Singapore and the rest of the world. CNM is uniquely positioned to prepare students for today's converging media environment, where communication professionals are expected to have a broad range of knowledge and creative skills, from critical thinking and excellent writing to the ability to create publications, including web sites and other interactive environments. CNM offers bachelor of arts, bachelor of social science (honours), master of arts and doctorate degrees. It also offers a double degree with the NUS School of Business.

Established in 1982, School of InfoComm Technology offers four full-time diplomas - Information Technology, Mobile Business Solutions, Financial Informatics, and Multimedia & Animation, and a part-time Specialist Diploma in 3D Animation & VFX.

The Diploma in Multimedia & Animation is a practice-oriented course that provides strong fundamentals in art and design in the first year. Students can opt to specialise in either Digital Animation or Interactive Media in the second year, and engaged in a one-year long production project in the third year.


Republic Polytechnic

Republic Polytechnic is Singapore's fifth post-secondary educational institute. It was established on 1 August 2002 and commenced operations from July 2003.

A key focus of Republic Polytechnic is the creation of a learning environment as opposed to a structure designed for instruction. This learning environment is one where subject knowledge is learned while using and developing process skills in the context of applications. This approach is termed Problem-Based Learning (PBL). In such a student-centred learning approach, students solve problems set by the designers by working in groups under the supervision of their facilitators.

Republic Polytechnic has six schools offering diploma programmes. To ensure that students are equipped with foundational and other generic skills required for further learning and specialized knowledge, all diploma programmes incorporate learning support from five centres.

School of Technology for the Arts - The School of Technology for the Arts at Republic Polytechnic is designed to deliver graduates who possess both creative imagination and technological expertise, and who will contribute immeasurably to the building of Singapore's creative industries.
